Home Improvements in the Cyber Age

Decorating Ideas DIY Repairs Home Improvement Interior Design Trade Tools

Home Improvements can be a daunting task especially if you are a first time home buyer or if you feel you are just not that handy. However, with technology today I think you will discover how easy it is to get by with simple tools and some quick web browsing. When I first moved into my new house I discovered the downstairs toilet was leaking. The previous home owners were nice enough to put a rag over it so it would pass inspection but it was readily apparent that this was not a permanent solution. Not knowing exactly what was wrong and given the amount of mould growing on the rag and surrounding parts I decided to replace the entire guts of the toilet. I had no idea how to do this or even where to start, however a quick You Tube search revealed several videos that showed me step by step how to complete the project and even what parts to buy!

In no time at all I had removed all the old components and installed the new ones.

Any hiccups I had with the installation were easily solved with another internet search. For example if the flapper will not stay open and you have to hold down the lever for the tank to drain try shortening the chain, it has to open all the way before it will gradually close allowing the tank to drain and refill. The main thing to remember is people have owned homes for hundreds of years and if one thing is certain about owning a home is that something is going to break and need repaired. Fortunately these things tend to be the same thing from home to home. I guarantee whatever issue you are having hundreds of people somewhere in the world have had the same problem, several of those people will be so proud of themselves after solving said problem that they will post about it in detail on You Tube or Home Improvement forums. So don’t forget the right tool for the job may not be an expensive wrench or hammer, it could be your home computer!

Picking a sofa for your home

Decorating Ideas Furniture Interior Design

A sofa is an essential accessory to every living room. It can become the focal point of a room, drawing the eye, as soon as one enters the room. A stylish sofa can do much to the décor of a room as long as it does not clash with the rest of the furniture in the room.

A sofa can be minimalist and simple, with straight lines and stiff backs, or ornate and curvy, with intricate wood carvings. The size and shape of the sofa should be chosen keeping the room it is going t occupy in mind. A too large sofa can dwarf a small room, while a small sofa set can look lost in large spaces. A sofa should not only look good, it should also be comfortable.

A sofa should invite people to sink into it after a long day. It should be comfortable enough for people to sit ad enjoy long conversations, or just relax while watching a movie or reading a book. As sofas are re-upholstered very rarely, it is very important to choose the right colour for your room. Dark colours are generally a no-no for small spaces as they can make the whole room appear smaller whereas light, summery colours can give an impression of light and space. A cane sofa is always a good choice.

The light brown colour is pleasant on the eye and will not jar with any other colour scheme in the room. It can be brightened up by adding cushions in a colour scheme to suit the rest of the room. Also the colour can be easily and cheaply changed, by just adding a coat of varnish on the cane or changing the colour scheme of the cushions. They are available in a variety of price ranges- to suit every pocket.

Much more than just Memory Foam…

Bedroom

When most people think of the words “memory foam”, they automatically think of mattresses. It is true that memory foam mattresses have become extremely popular due to the high level of comfort and support they have to offer but the use of memory foam is a lot more widespread than one might think.

It was developed by NASA around the concept of making the cushions in aircraft safer and more comfortable. Made from a combination of polyurethane and other chemicals, it is formulated to soften in reaction to body heat. This allows the foam to mold to the shape of the body and also assists in warming the body. Once pressure is removed, it will slowly return to it’s original shape. The general use of memory foam was first accepted by hospitals and other medical facilities.

They applied the moulding properties to use in wheelchair seat cushions, hospital pillows and padding for people that are bed ridden over long periods of time. The heat generating properties are helpful to that suffer from pressure related pains and prevents pressure sores. Often referred to as visco-elastic foam, the sensitivity of the foam will depend on the density. The properties of the memory foam mattress will depend on the height, density and type of foam used. A higher density foam will be firmer with a longer life span and a lower-density foam will be more pressure sensitive. The low density foam will have a shorter life span due to the compression that takes place with repeated use. With the commercialization of memory foam, it has become cheaper to reproduce and its uses are still expanding. It is now even being used in the making of shoes, but the memory foam mattress is still by far the most popular.

Memory foam pillows offer additional support for the head and neck for maximum comfort and relaxation while sleeping. Memory foam is hypoallergenic and users have experienced a decline in skin related allergies.

Benefits of installing a greenhouse

Garden
Benefits of installing a greenhouse

One of the greatest benefits of having a greenhouse garden is you will be able to have and grow your plants year round. They can also allow you to grow tropical plants in very cold climates because the greenhouse has its own atmosphere pretty much. Another great benefit is that the greenhouse will give you a chance to start your vegetables much earlier than you would normally be able to.

It also give you the opportunity of starting your plants from seeds and if you have a large garden this would be a much more economical option. Need help with the grocery bill? A greenhouse will give you the great chance of starting your vegetables that grow in containers better such as tomatoes, peppers, lettuce, strawberries, and many different herbs.

Then when the hot summer months come around you can move your potted plants outside, and when it starts getting cold again in the fall you can move them back in the greenhouse and that will extend you harvest for a few more months which will in turn save on the grocery bill. A greenhouse works basically like you vehicle does in the day. Energy and heat are trapped inside from the sunlight shining through the windows. Then the energy and heat greatly benefits your plants.

Greenhouses also have a vent fan for during the hot summer months to make sure it does not get to hot. You should hand water your greenhouse but there are irrigation systems and monitors that will turn on and off fans to regulate the temperature and humidity. With the monitors and the irrigation system your greenhouse will be pretty much self-sufficient as far as day to day maintenance is concerned.

While greenhouses do happen to cost a lot of money you will never stop getting rewarded for your venture be sure you hunt around looking for cheap greenhouses for sale before you buy from the first site you see. Your greenhouse will give you back new and unique varieties of plants, larger, and greater harvests, and an incalculable amount of gardening experience.
